Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius is suing the Browns and the Cleveland Clinic due to the recent rash of staph infections. Jurevicius' lawsuit states that physicians Anthony Miniaci and Richard Filger failed to warn him that the therapy equipment was not sanitized. He has had 5 additional surgeries after the initial knee surgery to clean out the staph infections and the lawsuit goes on to state that, "Jurevicius may never be able to play professional football again." An affidavit by Dr. Bonnie Bock, an infectious diseases specialist from Newport Beach, Calif., claimed, "Sterile techniques were not at all times used at the Browns training facility. Therapy devices commonly used by multiple Browns players were not properly maintained, disinfected or cleaned, if at all at the Browns training facility." His lawsuit is seeking more than $25,000 in damages, plus unspecified punitive damages, attorney and expert fees and related costs.
At least 6 players over the last few years have suffered from staph infections including Kellen Winslow who was recently traded after fighting with the team last year because they would not disclose his injury to the media. The Brown's handling of the staph infection as an undisclosed injury resulted in wild internet rumors saying he had testicular cancer or an STD, but when he finally spoke out about his injury the Browns reprimanded him. LeCharles Bentley signed with the Browns in 2006 and suffered a torn patellar tendon in his first practice as a Brown and never played a down again after suffering from severe staph infections and the doctors almost had to amputate his leg resulting in Bentley's retirement in 2008.
Look its about time someone has sued the Browns and the Cleveland Clinic because this is ridiculous, they have potentially ended 2 players careers and the spat between the organization and Winslow was the last straw between the 2 parties. I'm sorry but with the way the Browns have handled the situation they have looked completely classless. The NFL may need to step in and handle this if the Browns continue to not take action. Hopefully Joe Jurevicius will win the case and set an example for the rest of the league and steps can be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.
