The Cleveland Cavaliers have re-signed Anderson Varejao to a six-year deal worth about $42.5 million. The signing is kind of shocking to me since Varejao didn't re-sign the last two years and he seemed unhappy in Cleveland but I guess finishing your career with Lebron James and the addition of Shaq made it to hard for him to leave. I think Cleveland over paid for him, he is not a starter and is better suited to come off of the bench but he has brought a lot to the team. He is a good defender and brings in high energy and can score from in close improving on the offensive end each year. With Shaq and Zydrunas Ilgauskas carrying the offensive load in the front court Varejao should be able to concentrate on playing shut down defense on the Eastern big men.
The Cavs helped sure up their defense by signing free agent Anthony Parker. Last season Parker averaged 10.7 points for the Raptors while shooting 39 percent from the 3-point line which should help stretch the opponents defense. Parker brings a big body at the shooting guard position standing 6'6" which should help with the Cavs weak perimeter defense. He will be a good substitute for when Delonte West needs a breather or he can play when the Cavs need a defensive spark.
Next up on the Cavs list of free agents is power forward Channing Frye but he may want to go home to Arizona to play for the Suns. Frye could bring in some youth for Cavs front court but he is going to be hard pressed to find playing time Shaq, Big Z, and Varejao. Frye's scoring and rebounding has decreased each year he has been in the league but after he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers he was buried on the depth chart with the talented high draft choices they have mad over the last few years. If Fryes signs with Cavs and shows patience he could eventually be a starter but like I said he will not be high on the Cavs rotation with Shaq and Big Z.
