The Pittsburgh Penguins returned home yesterday only to be shut out by the unexpected upstart Phoenix Coyotes 3-0.
Two of the Coyotes goals came on the power play and the last one was an empty netter when the Penguins were trying to mount a late comeback. The Penguins were lethargic and played a terrible game that was filled with a lot of mistakes and very few shots. Brent Johnson made his first start of the season over Marc-Andre Fleury, who was given the night off, and played well enough to win stopping 24 shots but the rest of the Pens were committing stupid penalties and were out of position most of the night. The Pens were unable to solve Ilya Bryzgalov who easily turned aside all 24 shots he faced. Pittsburgh's two big stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin recorded almost as many penalties(2 apiece) as shots(3 for Crosby, 2 for Malkin). The Penguins start a tough 4 game road trip on Thursday at division leader Philadelphia, then the Maple Leafs, Senators, and it ends in Carolina. With the loss the Penguins drop to 2-1-0 and are now tied for second in the division with the Rangers.
GO PENGUINS!
