Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was indicted yesterday by a grand jury for weapons charges after Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg during the 2008 season. If convicted he faces up to 3 and a half years in prison. Burress was indicted on two charges of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. This is a huge blow to Plaxico, who was suspended for the remainder of the 2008 season and was released by the Giants in April, because if teams were weary of signing him before this all but assures that he will not join a team again because who wants to sign a guy for one year knowing that he is going to jail in some capacity in the next year or so and he could still face additional punishment from NFL commissioner Roger Gooddell. It's kind of funny because his lawyer found a loop hole in the system that delayed his trial until the next NFL offseason so he could possibly play one more season but the latest development pretty much squashes those hopes.
Former teammate Antonio Pierce was cleared of all possible charges, Pierce was with Burress the night he shot himself and drove Plax to the hospital. Pierce was never really in any trouble but he needed to tell his side of the story in order for him to be cleared and now he is free to return to the Giants and put this situation behind him.
The Giants look to move forward now without their star wide receiver who caught the game winning touchdown pass during New York's improbable come from behind victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42. After Burress was suspended Giants QB Eli Manning looked lost and the team crumbled down the stretch losing three of their last four games and were one and done in the playoffs, now the question is how good of a season will Eli have with no true number one option at wide out?
