The Pittsburgh Penguins(6-1-0) continued their hot play as of late winning a rematch of last years Eastern Conference Finals knocking off the Carolina Hurricanes(2-3-1) 3-2 in a shootout.
Michael Rupp and the Penguins set the tone early and jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Malkin(6) and Rupp(1) forced a 2-on-1 and Rupp was able to get the puck past Cam Ward for his first goal of the season. In the second period Malkin(3) continued the Pens domination taking the puck and scoring an impressive goal off of a Pascal Dupuis(1) pass giving the Pens a 2-0 lead early into the second period.
Both teams battled back and forth until the Pens finally gave up some ground and when they did the Hurricanes jumped all over them. Ray Whitney single handedly took control of the game in the third period scoring two goals, the first was only 4 minutes and 25 seconds into the period and the game tying goal came five and half minutes later, tying the game and forcing overtime.
In the extra period Malkin had a great chance at winning the game early on but he was stoned by the always reliable Ward and the game would eventually make it to a shootout. In the shootout Sidney Crosby would break the tie when he was able to put the puck past Ward. But Carolina would respond on their next try when Jussi Jokinen squirted the puck underneath Marc-Andre Fleury. Both teams were unsuccessful on their next three attempts until Chris Kunitz was able to solve the puzzle that is Cam Ward. Fleury shut down Eric Staal on the Canes final attempt to win his sixth game of the season and to remain unbeaten on the season. Fleury stopped 27 of 29 shots faced.
The Penguins have set a new franchise mark by winning their first five games on the road, their previous high was 4 straight twice in franchise history with the most recent time being two seasons ago. Crosby was held scoreless for the second consecutive game and for the fourth time in the last five games. This game was the last of a four game road trip and now the Pens will be home for the next week and a half. Up next the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
GO PENGUINS!
